“Hi, this is Catherine Walker, former educator here at Stearns School. Built in 1917 this school was originally known as the Columbus Institute and later renamed Stearns School. Frank Stearns was an industrialist from Ohio who had a keen interest in improving education for the children of Columbus and the surrounding areas. He donated the land the original school building sits on today.
When the school opened in 1917 it housed grades 1 through 11. Back in those days we didn’t have a 12th grade. As my daddy used to say, “we were so smart we didn’t need that extra grade.” The 12th grade was added here in 1946.
In 1988 Stearns School stopped serving the community as a school and became the administrative offices for the Polk County School System. Today it still assists young students get a much-needed education.”
